UNWIND: WITH... SIMON PEGG
-----
Simon Pegg shot to fame in C4's acclaimed comedy Spaced. He returns this week with a new series of the surreal sketch show Big Train, with Smack The Pony star Sally Phillips. Simon, 31, lives in North London with his girlfriend Maureen. Here he tells ANGELA HAGAN how he unwinds.

FAVOURITE TELLY: I love The Simpsons and never get bored of it. I also like Buffy The Vampire Slayer and comedies such as The League Of Gentleman, which is just excellent. I've also been watching Pop Idol, although it is starting to annoy me now. It's just exploitation of people who have the desire to be famous. It's like watching a car crash.

FAVOURITE FLICKS: I go to the cinema all the time, it's one of my favourite ways of relaxing. I recently saw The Lord Of The Rings, which I thought was truly spectacular. I enjoyed Harry Potter And The Philosopher's Stone too. I thought both films did the visual effects brilliantly. If anything, Harry Potter suffered a bit because they tried to stay so faithful to the book.

FAVOURITE HOBBY: I suppose it would have to be going to my local pub. It's like home from home for me. I can often be found in there with all my mates and the other regulars. I've lived in London for about eight years now and I love it. I couldn't imagine living anywhere else.

FAVOURITE BOOK: I recently read White Teeth by Zadie Smith, which I thought was an amazing book. It's really a very good read, I do recommend it. I also like Philip Pullman's Dark Materials trilogy. Plus I'm hoping to read Frank Miller's new book Dark Nights. I do love reading, it's just finding the time to do it. But when you do get into a good book, it's the best way to relax.

FAVOURITE MEAL: That would be the fishcakes at my local restaurant called Banham's in Crouch End, North London. They are unbelievably delicious. I gave up smoking about six months ago so I eat lots now and have put on weight. I don't mind so long as I don't restart smoking.

FAVOURITE FRIEND: That would have to be my mate Nick, who plays Mike in Spaced. He's my best buddy. He used to work in a restaurant and I heard he wanted to do stand-up comedy, so I helped him sort out his first few gigs. He's extraordinarily funny. It's just great working with friends.

l Big Train, Monday, BBC2, 9.30pm.
