Peggster.net has been receiving messages, daily, asking if SPACED will be available on DVD in the US (region 1).
Below are a couple of quotes that will answer that question.

------------------------------------

QUICK STOP ENTERTAINMENT: "Is there any movement on the release of Spaced in the U.S.?"

SIMON PEGG: "Not so far. We've been asked a lot on this tour, and the problem remains just a simple clearance issue for six… there are six tracks on the soundtrack which we don't want to change, which weren't cleared for North America. Because when we made the show…"

------------------------------------

CULTURE PULP: "Is there going to be a U.S. DVD release of "Spaced"?

EDGAR WRIGHT: "Hopefully -- there's some music-licensing issues. I think, bizarrely, it can be shown on TV. It's owned by Bravo, and I think they showed half the first series once at 2 o'clock in the morning. A lot of UK DVDs, when they get released in the States, have to change the music. And the music is so crucial in "Spaced," I would rather pay for everyone to have multi-region DVD players that have to go back and change the music. [laughs]"

------------------------------------

Why can't Spaced be shown here in the US on BBC America without any changes to the plot, characters or the music? I grant you the idiots that monitor stuff are way over the top in some areas here but with shows like MI5 and Hollyoak, come on. These are well written shows. So why is it so difficult to get a well written production like Spaced on? :?

Spaced has previously been shown on Trio (now deceased) and BBCAmerica, but unfortunately the episodes were cut down to fit into a thirty-minute slot with commercials. Not sure why they did that when other shows are allowed to run to forty minutes and stay intact but oh well. I mean, there were entire scenes I didn't know about till I got the region 2 DVDs.

Maybe someday...

It's probably best to invest in a region free DVD player, as others have said. Turns out my DVD player was hackable, but still had to order the Spaced DVDs from Amazon UK (they were delivered surprisingly fast).

I'll pass this on - the DVD player I have is a bare-bones player, no bells or whistles. It's on sale at Target this week for $35. That's the good news. The bad news is that it may no longer be hackable, so use this info with caution.

Rats: looks like I will have to order the DVDs from Amazon UK. I do have a bare bones DVD/VCR player; not that technical so don't need bells, etc. I will check again with Amazon USA, then head over to Amazon UK. BBC America also messed with Murphy's Law. I was just getting into the series and then poof its off with no warning, just gone. :x

Amazon USA only has the Spaced DVDs from their marketplace sellers, who are asking way too much. Amazon UK has the awesome 3-disc Collectors' Edition, which, for me, ended up being $29-something, including shipping. BTW, if you have an account with Amazon USA, you can use the same info for Amazon UK. Before I bought from Amazon UK, I emailed to ask them about this and here's what they wrote:

Quote:
If you have already set up an account with Amazon.com, Amazon.de, Amazon.fr or Amazon.ca it is not necessary for you to create a new account, as your e-mail address and password will be accepted.

Hope this helps. :)

More importantly, your credit card will be accepted and the currency rate will automatically be converted, minus the VAT. :) Which unfortunately isn't the case on all sites; Play.com didn't want to accept info for an overseas address.

Really? The site no longer converts currency for me. My orders still go off without a hitch, but I miss the convenience of the automatic conversion.

Hey: thanks folks for your help. Unfortunately, I do not use credit cards anymore. I will set up an account on Amazon here and will check to see what Amazon UK will accept. $29 doesn't sound bad at all for a 3-disk collection and even if S&H is more, still would not matter to me. I want this series. :D

Just checked my credit card statement. When converted to US dollars, the 3-disc Spaced cost $29.52 (this included shipping), plus I was charged an an 88 cent foreign transaction fee - total $30.40, still not bad.

I forgot that when I emailed Amazon UK they gave me a link to a conversion site - http://www.xe.com/.

A quote from the MySpace page of a certain E.Wright today...

We first have to get the Region 1 DVD sorted - and believe me, we are on it!

It's funny... I'm so used to taking it for granted that I have Spaced on DVD, it didn't occur to me that of course that would be a huge step before you could have any kind of US event. When we were having the discussion on SO the other night and Harmz brought that up, I did a big ol' dopeslap.

I'm not allowed to forget that it's not on R1, people just don't stop emailing me to ask about it. ;)

Poor Harmz. Gmail have got to do something about creating mail filters, dammit.

lemmie tell ya, i just finally caved and got a dvd player hack so my dvd player can play all regions of dvds. i could NOT wait any longer to have my fave britcoms to be made available for my region (USA). and the thought of waiting forever for them IF they do make them available for my region would mean they would possibly have to change the music within the episodes for legal reasons yadda yadda yadda would kill me. I am a purist when it comes to these shows. I don't want them revamped or new fancy effects or new music. I have the original episodes of red dwarf with the shitty effects and that's the way (uh-huh uh-huh) i like it!
;)
long story short (too late). i highly recommend for anyone out there suffering from "REGIONaires Disease", either go online and get the dvd hack code for your dvd player or invest the extra dosh (region free dvd players aren't as pricey as they once were) and get a region free dvd player. it's fried gold! trust me!
