As you may know, Shaun of the Dead (directed by Edgar Wright) is now available on DVD in the USA.  Being the lucky little kitty I am, I already had the UK DVD for a few months now.  So, instead of reviewing the US release by itself, I will review it compared to the UK release.

First, a bit about the film... Its one great film!  A RomZomCom.  For those zombies out there, "RomZomCom" means it is a "Romantic Zombie Comedy".  In this film, "Spaced" star Simon Pegg plays Shaun, a 29-year-old still living the life of a college student.  He shares a place with his friends Ed (played by the talented Nick Frost) and mean old Pete (Peter Serafinowicz), spending a lot of time at a pub called The Winchester, and neglecting his poor girlfriend Liz (Kate Ashfield- purrr!).  When Liz decides that enough is enough and dumps Shaun, he suddenly wakes up and not only realises it is time to grow up, but also that, ARGH!!!, there are zombies all over London!!!!  So, he and Ed set out to rescue his Mum (Penelope Wilton) and Liz, but then end up having to drag along his step-dad Phillip (Bill Nighy) and Liz's friends, David (Dylan Moran) and Dianne (Lucy Davis). Guess where they go?  The Winchester!

Next, the DVDs themselves:  The US DVD has a cool looking new cover featuring the three stars of the film:  Ed (Nick Frost), Shaun (Simon Pegg), and Liz (Kate Ashfield), ready to kick some zombie ass ... or should I say 'arse'?  Also, it now has that neat-o quote from Dawn of the Dead director George Romero right one the cover!  Edgar and Simon- you guys must be so proud!  The UK box also rules, with its bright red color and an image of Shaun on the back with his cricket bat on his shoulder.    When I popped the DVD into my player they both began the same ... oh, wait ... no they didn't.  The US release has those annoying previews before the menu, oh well.  But besides that, the menus look pretty much the same and the film plays the same.

Last, but definately not least, the DVD extras!  On the US DVD there's funny out-takes, deleted scenes, a video diary from Simon, a section about the special effects used in the film, the tv bits, photos, star commentary and trivia!  I was a bit dissappointed to discover that some of the UK extras were taken off though, like Lucy Davis' video Diary and also Joe's Diary.  He was a zombie extra, and filmed a pretty awesome little video diary.  Also, missing were the extra commentaries from Bill Nighy and Penelope Wilton as well as the zombie commentary.  The US release did get something the UK release didn't though.  Casting tapes!  They were hilarious!!!

My rating would be a 9 (out of 10) for the US release.
